About

Like many others, for me Asia, even little old Laos, has long been a source of inspiration, especially photographically. However, more recently the inspiration has bottomed out and the on-again, off-again love affair has soured significantly. How come? Maybe I’ve just been here too long. Case study: Yesterday, a Sunday, I took a bike ride out to visit a friend in what might be called the new suburbs of Vientiane. Not so long ago it was rice fields. Now it’s a disaster zone: unplanned, uncontrolled development gone mad; everything’s under construction/destruction; cement/gravel trucks charge aggresively along the narrow pot-holed roads pumping out black exhaust fumes and forcing through swarms of motorcycles; Chinese factories take over the remaining wetlands, dust and ugliness everywhere even in the tourist area downtown where an embankment road is being built all along the Mekong. Goodbye Mekong views. Hello earth movers. Cynical, moi? Let’s just say I’m not inspired.

Fotosearch

Too my surprise it seems I’m more famous than I thought, or maybe would like to be. Doing a simple Google search under my name I found a large number of my images on the Fotosearch website. I’ve never heard of this site before, nor do I remember ever being asked to have my images placed there. These are fairly old images, but still pretty good, that were originally placed with a London photo agency – Imapct Photos – back in the 90s and which may be defunt by now. Certainly it’s been a very long time since I heard from them or recieved any cheques. I stopped submitting images and pulled out most of my originals from Impact a long time ago but let them keep scanned copies.
I’ve emailed them about Fotosearch, but am not sure if that address is still valid. What concerns me is the ominous statement on the Fotosearch site saying ‘These images are Royalty Free.’ Does anyone have any info on Fotosearch or experience with them? It’s US based.
